How concrete driveway replacement runs
The old slab is broken out and removed, which is a real cost in machinery and haulage and is often the largest single line in the quote.
The exposed sub-grade is inspected, and this is the moment the actual problem gets found: a soft spot, a buried stump, a utility trench that was never compacted, or drainage running under the slab.
New base goes in as compacted crushed stone in lifts, plate-compacted rather than dumped, to six or eight inches depending on what came out.
The new slab gets its thickness set by what will park on it, its reinforcement placed at mid-depth on chairs, and its control joints laid out to give roughly square panels.
