Las Vegas Elite Concrete A broom finish is the default surface on exterior concrete because it is the cheapest way to get reliable slip resistance, and the direction of the stroke matters more than people expect. Free on-site quote, usually within two working days.

The slab is floated flat and then dragged with a broom while the surface is still plastic, leaving fine parallel grooves. Those grooves are the texture your foot grips.
Stroke direction runs across the direction of travel and across the fall, so water crosses the grooves rather than running along them. A driveway broomed the wrong way channels water down the ridges to the garage door.
Broom finish is the default on valley driveways, and here the grooves are shedding monsoon runoff rather than winter water.
Timing is the whole skill. Too early and the broom tears the surface and brings up paste. Too late and it barely marks it, leaving a slab that looks textured and is slick when wet.
Broom coarseness sets the depth. A soft broom gives a light texture that is comfortable barefoot on a pool deck. A stiff broom gives a heavy texture that grips on a sloped driveway and is unpleasant to kneel on.
Edges and joints get tooled before brooming, so the broom pass runs over them and the surface reads as continuous rather than as panels with a smooth border.
Broom finish is the baseline against which every other finish is priced. It adds nothing to a plain pour beyond the finishing labour that would happen anyway.
It adds nothing over a plain pour beyond finishing labour, which is why it anchors the bottom of the $7-$13 per square foot range.
The mistake is brooming a slab that was overworked with a power trowel first. Troweling brings paste and water to the surface, and a broom texture on top of that weak skin wears off in a couple of years and leaves a smooth slab.
In a Las Vegas July the air is over 45 degrees at 15 percent humidity, and fresh concrete loses surface water faster than it can bleed. A crew that floats too long in that heat brings paste to the surface and then brooms a texture into a weak skin, which wears smooth in a couple of summers.
We cover Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and the wider Clark County valley, including and 34 more areas.
Not if the texture was cut at the right time and runs across the direction of travel. A light broom on a slab that was floated too long can be.
Across the direction people walk and across the slope, so water crosses the grooves instead of running along them.
It can be ground and coated or overlaid. Grinding off a texture to get a smooth slab is not usually worth doing.
